Spinal fusion surgery is one of the methods used to treat various spinal complications, such as deformity, trauma, degenerative disc disease and instability. The spinal fusion surgery with autogenous bone graft has been widely used. Because more complications will occur in autogenous bone graft and the sources are limited, researchers begin to look for a variety of allograft or bone graft substitutes. As a kind of new and built-in material, porous tantalum is gradually expanding in the clinical application, due to its excellent biocompatibility and its safety to be used in human body. Because of its capacity to form a self-passivated surface oxide layer, porous tantalum has the biological activity and biocompatibility, and this oxide layer can form a kind of structure similar to bone apatite coating in human body, which has such characteristics as promoting excellent bone and fiber inward growth and allowing fast and solid bone and soft tissues adhesion. Researchers begin to pay more attention to mesenchymal stem cells because of its rich resource, quality of being easily-obtained and quality of performing autologous transplantation without immune rejection, pluripotent. The porous tantalum stent of composite mesenchymal stem cells can maintain cellular biological activity, promote cell adhesion and proliferation and has the capacity to significantly promote bone formation. The porous tantalum stent of composite mesenchymal stem cells has a unique advantage in interbody fusion. With the development of biomedical technology, its application in the clinical field, especially in spinal fusion surgery, will be supported.
