With the increase of population aging, there are more and more people who have osteoarthritis of the knee joint and other serious diseases. The diseases of the knee joint have brought immense suffering to the patients, and greatly reduced the patients’ quality of life. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is one of the standardized surgical treatments for severe knee joint diseases and has shown satisfactory results in alleviating patients’ suffering, restoring joint function, improving the quality of life and so on. In the early 1980s, the cementless porous-coated surface prosthesis began to be used in clinical practice. From then on, there appeared 2 types of knee prostheses, including biological and cement prostheses, with or without porous coating. The biological surface knee prosthesis are mainly applies to young people with good bone quality. According to the related reports, the biologoical knee arthroplasty could reach the same good results as the cemented knee arthroplasty. With the technological progress in the surgical treatment and the development of biological materials such as metals, polymers and so on, the biological surface knee prosthesis has attracted more and more attention. So far, the biological surface knee prosthesis has been widely used in clinical practice and deeply researched in Europe and the United States. However, such reports are very rare in our country. This article reviewed the latest progress in the clinical application of the biological surface knee prosthesis.
