Background  Subungual exostosis is a benign bone tumor, arising beneath the nail of finger or toe, and its typical manifestations are subungual mass and nail deformity. It is not so difficult to make diagnosis and conduct treatment. Prognosis is also good. However, insufficient understanding which may lead to delayed diagnosis and improper treatment would cause not only recurrence but also irreversible nail deformity, which destroy the appearance and function of the finger or toe. Objective  To discuss the clinical diagnosis and surgical treatment of subungual exostosis of the finger. Methods  We had collected 16 cases of subungual exostosis of the finger and retrospectively analyzed the clinical symptoms, roentgenography, pathological diagnosis and surgical approaches. Follow-up and evaluation were applied. Results  All the cases underwent surgery after the confirmed diagnosis. The postoperative follow-up period for all the cases was in the range of 9 months to 3 years, and there was no recurrence. The nail regeneration and appearance of the finger were satisfactory. Conclusions  Satisfactory therapeutic effects can be achieved if the nail bed was well protected intraoperatively on the basis of early diagnosis and surgical treatment of subungual exostosis.
