President Boden, Members of the AOA, Guests, Ladies, and Gentlemen, it is truly an honor to address you as the incoming president of this esteemed and historic organization. I would like to acknowledge any residents in the audience or those who may read future versions of this talk. For many of us in an academic orthopaedics, the residents are what our job is all about, and residents are what this talk is all about.

We are in a time of tremendous change in health care, and surgical education is caught in the changes. Surgical education has been a focus throughout my career, and I have some thoughts on the challenges that we face in training the future generation of orthopaedic surgeons. I will concentrate on why and how surgical education has changed, is changing, and will change. Indeed, the concept of change is captured in the title.
